After an intense twelve years of waiting, Pixar have finally greenlit a sequel to the hugely popular animated film, The Incredibles. The film follows the Parr family as they embrace their differences, and become the superheroes they were meant to be.
Director Brad Bird gave an update on what viewers can expect when they revisit this famous super family. He wasn’t quite ready to reveal any major plot points but he did say: “It’s very actively moving, and we’re excited about it,” He added: “[We’re] trying to take it in some new directions.”
There has been some anxiety as, when The Incredibles was first released, superhero films and franchises were in the minority and that is definitely not the case any longer with the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe and the similar DC and 21st Century Fox forays into the genre. It is possible the Oscar-winning animation might not be able to compete- but given the popularity of the first film, and Pixar’s pulling power, it seems unlikely.
As with any sequel, there are always going to be questions on how they can both build on, and move away from, the original with Bird clarifying: “Hopefully it’s the same characters and feel, but going in a new direction.” He went on to explain, “I mean, that’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself.”
The Incredibles 2 will be released 21st June, 2019 in the US. Relive the excitement of The Incredibles by re-watching the trailer below.
