David Walliams (as well as the usual lineup of Dame Jacqueline Wilson and Dame Julia Donaldson) is writing a £1 book for World Book Day.
His book is untitled so far, but will be available alongside Jacqueline’s story, called Butterfly Beach and Julia has worked with writer and illustrator Lydia Monks to write Princess Mirror-Belle and Snow White.
As part of World Book Day, Children in the UK and Ireland are given a £1 token in school to get a free World Book Day book. The token can be used from 27th February to 27th March 2017. The aforementioned three titles will be amongst the 10 books available, which are aimed at children from pre-school to teenagers.
The director of World Book Day Kirsten Grant said of the event that it was: “about creating readers for the future by igniting a love of books and reading in children and young people. It’s about encouraging them to visit their local bookshop and empowering them to make their own choices about the kinds of books they want to read.”
Other authors include Enid Blyton and Francesca Simon.
World Book Day is a Unesco designated charity and turns 20 in 2017. The £1 book scheme gave 789,738 books in 2016 and has given a total of 13 million books in its lifetime.
