The first trailer for an upcoming live-action remake of Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy-tale has been released, but it’s not the Disney version.
First published in 1837, Anderson’s tale of a mermaid’s sacrifice for love has sparked many adaptations, most famously Disney’s 1989 animated feature. However this film, the launch project of all new MVP Studios, hopes to create a brand new perspective to the beloved story.
Produced by Robert Molloy and Armando Gutierrez, who also set up the studio, the film stars Loretto Peralta and William Moseley (best known as Peter Pevensey in The Chronicles of Narnia) as a young orphan girl and her older reporter brother, who travel to Mississippi to investigate a girl who may be the real Little Mermaid.
Poppy Drayton (Downtown Abbey) and Gina Gershon (Empire) also star, as well as Oscar winner Shirley Maclaine as an elderly woman with a deep, yet unknown, connection to the story.
Molloy and Gutierrez have said that the film hopes to be: ‘a magical adventure that uses the beloved fairytale as its jumping off point, but is an all-new story with all-new characters that the entire family can enjoy.’
