The new Mastodon record ‘Once More ‘Round the Sun’ is one of the most hotly anticipated upcoming metal releases of the year, and if this first single, ‘High Road’, is anything to go by, we’re in for another blinder!
The music sounds like a continuation of the more song-based approach of the band’s previous album, 2011’s The Hunter. Driven by a heavy, sludgy riff and Brann Dailor’s instantly recognisable, frantic drumming, the song bears all the hallmarks of a classic Mastodon track. Bassist Troy Sanders bellows his way through the verses, while Brann takes over the lead for a chorus that was surely written with festival crowds in mind, reminiscent of the almost anthemic nature of previous single ‘Curl of the Burl’. While these newer, more commercial (comparatively, at least) leanings may be unfamiliar to fans of their earlier, more complex material, they have managed to broaden their musical scope while still staying true to these roots, and the sing-along appeal of songs such as this are certain to go down a treat in a live setting.
Mastodon have once again shown themselves to be among the best bands in modern metal; ‘High Road’ marks their next step on the road to world domination.
