It was three years ago today that Lady Gaga unveiled the music video to accompany her single, ‘Yoü and I’.
The six minute-long video is a piece of art in itself, where Gaga’s persona has flashbacks from her time in Nebraska, ranging from scenes where Gaga portrays Yüyi the Mermaid to stunning, cinematic moments when Gaga plays the piano in the centre of a cornfield. As well as starring Lady Gaga, the video features her male alter ego, Jo Calderone, as well as her long-term boyfriend, Taylor Kinney, who she originally met on the set of the video.
‘Yoü and I’ was the fourth single to be lifted from Gaga’s number one album, Born This Way. It followed hit singles ‘Judas’, ‘The Edge of Glory’ and the album’s title track. The track peaked at position 23 in the UK charts, but managed to break the top ten in the US, sitting comfortably at number six.
As well as the video for ‘Yoü and I’, Lady Gaga has amassed many epochal music videos, including ‘Bad Romance’, ‘Poker Face’ and ‘Applause’, with the latter littered with art references including nods to Botticelli’s ‘The Birth of Venus’ painting and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis.
