Released back in 23rd September 1994, The Shawshank Redemption celebrates its twentieth anniversary today and has become one of cinema’s most loved films.
Despite this, Frank Darabont’s film hardly set the box office on fire upon its release. Making just $28 million, the film (based upon Stephen King’s novella entitled Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption), struggled to recoup its $25 million production budget and that’s without taking into account marketing and distribution costs. Although not met with commercial success, it received critical acclaim, and has since been taken into the hearts of many.
The film tells the story of banker Andy Dufresne’s time in the titular Shawshank state prison. Nominated for seven Oscars (including Best Picture, which Forrest Gump took home) the Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman-starring film currently sits at the number one spot in the IMDb top 250 and is arguably one of the best films ever to be made.
