SomaHigh are a rock band from Southampton. Their new ambitious and energetic EP demonstrates a band that are pushing the boundaries of modern melodic punk rock and mixing it with their own brand of pop-tastic groove.
Naming influences such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Nirvana, Jeff Buckley, Prince, Grandaddy, Aimee Mann, Blur, Elliott Smith, Massive Attack, Lamb, Martin Grech, The Doors, The Super Furry Animals, Queens of the Stone Age, Nine Inch Nails, The Rolling Stones, Radiohead and Soulwax, the band really encompass a sound that spans so many genres, it’s impossible not to find something to like in their music.
Since the guys have got together, a strong fan base has shown consistent support for SomaHigh‘s enthusiasm for experimentation which had been demonstrated through their impressive evolution. Vocalist and song writer Sean Strugnell sings about love, modern life and thoughts and emotions that are current and significant in today’s climate. Bassist Leon Azor brings in a groove that flows much like drummer Ryan Smith, whose beats and rolls bring energy and presence to the band, whilst keyboardist Paul Wolf delivers atmospheric synth and powerful keys. Recently they have supported Razorlight, Cage the Elephant, and The Baddies.
SomaHigh – Something about you EP
Fizzing with energy, there is a certain charm apparent in this south coast band. ‘Something About You’ offers more than your standard pop-punk tune. The opener is very enjoyable, but perhaps the strongest track on the EP is ‘Flashback Tuesday’. Combining a catchy riff with a shout-along chorus, it seems to get better as it continues. The third and final track ‘We Don’t Want This’ is catchy and upbeat as usual, but its repetitiveness denies it from being as much of a success as the previous tracks. This EP shows a band with a bright future and a great attitude.
