Meet The Funk Division; hailing from the Midlands, this trio are blending jazz, soul and R&B for a sound that is, for lack of a better word, pretty funky. Composed of producer Mark Anthony, house/garage whiz Derek King and superb vocalist Samantha Pearce, these three produce powerful sounds and have remixed tracks for world class artists.
Originally called The Sound Garden, the band formed in 2013 before reshuffling to focus on their genre of choice and hone their sound; an acid jazz infused, classic twist R&B. Their first official single, ‘What You Want’, is debuting soon; the song starts somewhat 60s, with strong and slick female vocals with power that echoes the song’s statements of independence and self-affirmation. Choruses build to deliver a rich sounding take on modern jazz; power and bluesy instrumentation are layered with quick lyrics to give a smooth, polished sound.
Their varied influences are clear in their sound; jazz, transformed with repeating refrains to introduce elements of blues, gaining a powerful rhythm that makes you want to shake your hips.
‘What You Want’ is released 27th September via Digital Jukebox/BBC Worldwide Publishing.
