The Young Knives may live up to their English stereotype somewhat with their references to “the porridge sky” and “gravel blinds”, but ‘Vision in Rags’ shows how versatile they really are.
The song starts with electronic drums clashing with bongos, then a fat synth bassline, before a big singalong chorus. There is even a Beach Boys-esque bit of falsetto “ooh-ahh”-ing. With its four-to-the-floor beat and grey lyrics, The Young Knives’ latest single sounds like a summer song written for the autumn. ‘Vision in Rags’ is a great song, musically intriguing and lyrically impenetrable.
