Zara Larsson is determined to prove she’s the queen of pop. The ease of her versatility within the genre is enviable, with her breathtaking vocals effortlessly implantable in whatever floor-filler is cooked up for her. With the world anxiously anticipating a new album to follow 2014’s 1, released exclusively in Scandinavia, ‘So Good’ is an accurately titled record that makes the wait even more breathless.
While not as punchy as the sickly sweet ‘Lush Life’ or the bouncy electronic ‘I Would Like,’ ‘So Good’ is as seductive as its beautiful cover art. As smooth as Dairy Milk chocolate, ‘So Good’ somehow bypasses your brain completely on its way to your heart. It definitely shouldn’t be as good as it is: it’s pretty much all chorus, the beats refuse to relent as they loop the track, and Ty Dolla $ign’s appearance is blink and you’ll miss it.
It is the euphoric hook that propels ‘So Good’ into chart dominating territory – “You be stuck on it because my love’s so good / So ya keep comin’ back to get some more,” she brags, clearly at ease with her success. Could she be the one to usurp Ed? Quite possibly: her dabble into more urban pop is a welcome change and a challenge she straddles without problem. Now, it’d be so good if she would hurry up with that album.
